Apple can help assess if the issue you are having can be fixed over the phone, or if it requires further inspection.
Just remember, Apple products have a 1 year warranty as standard, and 90 days of phone support (from data of purchase)
Extended warrantys (Applecare) can be purchased to allow a total of 3 years warranty and phone support for Mac systems and a total of 2 years of hardware and phone support for iPods.
